Iranians in Belgium protest EU’s silence on human rights abuse in Iran

NCRI - About 100 members of Brussels’ Iranian community held a protest in the Belgian capital’s Schuman Square outside the European institutions on Thursday to denounce the silence of the European Union regarding the abysmal human rights violations that are ongoing in Iran. They urged European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini to cancel her planned trip to Iran next week.
The protesters decried the fact that the EU has ignored human rights abuses in Iran since the nuclear negotiations began two years ago. The Iranians said the European Union cannot justify its silence.

According to a report by the Brussels Times, “for the Iranian people what matters most is freedom,” said a protester. “The nuclear agreement is not solving any human rights issues. Europe is defined by its democratic values. It has set them aside while it was negotiating this agreement.”
The protestors pointed out that over 1,800 people have been hanged since Hassan Rouhani became president on August 4, 2013, the report said.
They further underscored that on the day the nuclear agreement was reached last week, basic services such as the provision of food were blocked at Camp Liberty in Iraq which houses thousands of members of Iran’s main opposition group People’s Mojahedin of Iran, PMOI (Mujahedin-e Khalq, MEK). The inhumane blockade by the Iraqi government lasted for five days.
The protesters sent a message of support to the more than 200 teachers who were arrested in Tehran during a protest outside the regime’s Majlis (Parliament) demanding their minimum rights on Wednesday.
